Tuition and Legislation:
Arizona lawmakers recently passed a law that denies in-state tuition to undocumented students. Undocumented students will now have to pay the out-of-state tuition rate at Arizona’s public institutions. The cost for out-of-state tuition is about 3 times as much as in-state tuition.
Affirmative Action and admissions:
“University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor John Wiley told a legislative committee reviewing affirmative action Thursday that high school grades and test scores aren’t good predictors of a student’s performance in college.”
Customer service issues and enrollment:
Great Service Matters is a blog on customer service, retention, enrollment, and morale in higher education. Featuring catchy titles, Great Service Matters is well written and informative. Post titles are very creative: “Bathroom Solutions to Keep Staff and Students from Circling the Dropout Drain“, “Losing Enrollment in C-Lot” , “Starbucks and Enrollment Increases“, and “Web Sites, Signs, Objective Correlatives Hurt Enrollment.”
Oregon University System (OUS):
The Oregon University System has been in a long period of budget cuts and financial instability. A recent state budget proposal featured “the first big cash infusion in almost a decade.”
Overt Campus Racism:
The University of Texas’ Austin campus features four bronze statues that “honor confederate leaders.” University of Texas’ president, William Powers Jr., doesn’t seem to get the fact that the university is celebrating racism by honoring leaders of the confederacy.
‘A lot of students, and especially minority students, have raised concerns. And those are understandable and legitimate concerns. On the other hand, the statues have been here for a long time, and that’s something we have to take into account as well,’ Powers said in Wednesday’s Austin American-Statesman.”
