Close Your Eyes…

…now, touch your computer screen.

1 dollar bill

20 dollar bill

10 dollar bill

Could you tell the bills apart? Was there any way to differentiate each denomination?

They all feel the same. The 20 dollar bill feels just like a 1 dollar bill. The 10 dollar bill feels just like a 20 dollar bill. This is what it’s like for folks who are visually impaired. US paper currency is impossible to identify if you cannot see. Ableism takes many shapes/sizes or in this case, it doesn’t.

A U.S. District Judge has ruled that “the government discriminates against blind people by printing money that all looks and feels the same.” Judge James Robinson has ruled that “the U.S. Treasury Department must change the design of paper currency so that the denomination of bills is easily distinguishable to blind and visually impaired persons.”

According to Judge Robinson, “Of the more than 180 countries that issue paper currency, only the United States prints bills that are identical in size and color in all their denominations.”

Or why not give them debit cards. Quick swipe with no fumbling over money. And if they need to check their balance, they can have someone write down the number on the back of the card in braille and call the bank. Why bother with dollar bills when you have one card.
