Racism + Sexism in the Providence Journal
In response to:
A ‘masculist’ worries about Ms. Clinton by FRANCIS DALY Jr. and
Barack Obama’s great exotic emptiness by FROMA HARROP
A white anti-racist feminist man responds to racist/sexist rhetoric in the Providence Journal….
It is unfortunate that the Providence Journal Editorial Board feels the need to print not one, but two articles which serve to marginalize people of color and women. As a white man who is an active anti-racist feminist ally, I feel that it is my responsibility to address these oppression-oriented pieces of rubbish.

Goode isn’t good
Virgil Goode is a congressman from Virginia. He’s a one-man-oppression machine. He should be called Virgil “the oppressionator 3000″ Goode. In a recent letter to constituents, Virgil “the Oppressionator 3000″ targeted Minnesota’s newly elected Congressman, Keith Ellison. Ellison is the first Muslim to be elected to Congress.
Harry Potter – Year 7

Yes, you are correct. My nerdiness knows no bounds. Yesterday, I signed up for one copy of Harry Potter: Year 7. It is scheduled to drop in July of 2007. Wendy scoffed at me while I signed up but was quick to sign up for her own copy after I said something about letting her know how it all ends
Update: Book 7 has a title! — “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” (via Faris)
Enrollment Management update
Higher education enrollment management is a complicated process that is often filled with new technologies, marketing, and social justice.

Admissions in Michigan
The recent evisceration of affirmative action in Michigan has created a huge problem for admissions staff at the University of Michigan, Wayne State University and Michigan State University. The constitutional amendment in Michigan becomes an official part of the state’s constitution on December 22nd. Admissions applications and financial aid packages which were considered while affirmative action was on the books will now need to be modified to meet the new anti-affirmative-action-racist-sexist-white-supremacist-amendment.
The Michigan Attorney General has warned the University of Michigan, Wayne State University and Michigan State University that any attempts to delay the implementation of the new anti-affirmative-action-racist-sexist-white-supremacist-amendment via lawsuits will be “vigorously” challenged.
Rosie’s statements were racist
Jenn critically analyzes Rosie O’Donnell’s “ching chong” statements as well as taking a look at the myriad of racist responses from the media/blogosphere. O’Donnell’s statements on the view seem to have been overtly overlooked by most mainstream news outlets. It appears to be a trend that media coverage of racism against Asian Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans is swept aside to make way for the more stereotypical and polarized “white vs. Black.”
Note: Jenn’s blog, Reappropriate, is a great read. Her critiques on social justice issues are top notch. You should add her feed to your feedreader asap.
Eric Stoller on Eric Stoller
Greetings.
Daily readers of the ESB may have noticed that I’ve been tweaking the blog quite a bit since August.
I’ve added Google Search functionality, re-arranged the sidebar content, written a Pulitzer-worthy “about me” section, and included the ability to engage in live instant messaging via Meebo.com (live chat subject to availability and admin moodiness).
The site’s tag cloud displays context-based links to what I’ve been writing about since I added tags to the ESB:
Sunday Links
- Rachel on racism and racists
- Blackprof on “Who is a real Native American?“
- Also from Blackprof, “Ward Connerly: [he] operates quietly, and dangerously behind the scenes, selling out in the name of love.“
- A Trail of Diamonds: A photo essay that shows the oppression of the diamond industry.
