Eric, I am a lesbian and I have seen my share of pornography. I feel I must agree with you. Women are shown as just something to orgasm in and not smart and dignified that many women are. With women choosing to sell their bodies helps men come up with the idea that women are only good for sex and they deserved to be raped. I also feel if women want to be in porn, they should find feminine friendly movies. However, I doubt they are out there.

I think in gay pornography, there is not so much this sense of violence. Granted, a bottom is a means for an end but I don't necessarily see bottoms being brutalized. Then again, maybe I haven't seen enough porn.

On the subject of lesbian pornography, I think you are right. Much of lesbian pornography is geared towards a male audience. If it was not, then lesbian sex would be more about the connection between the women v.s. the sex.

I like to believe that I am liberal. Yet, I feel women can do so much better than being a porn star and risking AIDS and all other STIs.

Eric,
Of course you'd be writing through your hetero-white-man lens, but that means little in terms of your arguments. I don't know what your sex positive friends are saying, but it's bull. I may be biased since I'm totally with you.
Awesome paper. :)

@ Jessica:

I'm not sure about the intersection of gender and class when it comes to prostitution. I am still thinking/exploring about the paradox of something which can be empowering and oppressive in the same context.

I have done a lot of thinking since I wrote this paper. I think I should have had a disclaimer at the beginning which said "Please read if you are a middle-class heterosexual white man." I wrote it from my own experience and perspective regarding patriarchy, prostitution, and pornography. When the paper extends outside of my own identity I see that it can be extremely oppressive. It's no wonder that sex positive people have ripped it to shreds. My words are coming from my "man lens." I am not sure how I can write a paper that is beneficial to the education of patriarchal oppressors while simultaneously coming off as being not oppressive.

A really ambitious paper with tough topics to handle. I'm glad to have had the chance to read it. I'd be interested in hearing what you think about the intersection of class and gender when it comes to prostitution. It seems to me that it isn't a clear cut example of the power of patriarchy. And since we are all a work in progress, I wonder what your thinking may be now regarding the comments that your paper itself is oppressive or that others disagreed with your position?
